Female hens can be placed in a building called chicken coop. This building usually has nest boxes for hens when they lay eggs and a perch which is built for chickens to sleep in. Nest boxes or perches are not usually available in coops that are only for chickens bred for meat. Loose materials such as straw or wood chips are usually scattered on the floors of a chicken coop for the chicken droppings.
There are some who would question if chickens do really need chicken coops. Others would debate that chickens should be set out to their natural habitat, which is just outside straying and looking for food by themselves. There are instances where stray chickens do look healthier than the chickens in chicken coops. This may be due to the fact that there is a specified amount of chicken feeds given every day to chickens in chicken coops compared to chickens that can eat as much as they can find and whenever they like.
Open-sided coops are usually recommended instead of the traditional ones, which can be quite unhealthy for the chickens as there can be poor air quality, poor ventilation and poor lighting. Other chicken owners would still have their chickens inside coops instead of outside due to the belief that chickens tend to get ill easier if they are outside, exposed to everything.
Note that chicken coops should not be allowed to be exposed to extreme colds and/or extreme heat. If cold drafts enter the chicken coop, the chickens may get cold, and if the chicken coop is too hot, dehydration may occur. The roof should be built high so that there is a good ventilation, but a higher roofs tend to give a cooler environment. The windows of chicken coops should be adequate, especially for the egg-laying chickens. You should take care of the proper lighting. Researches have shown that adequate lighting stimulates the glands that that releases egg-making hormones.
Furthermore, adequate space is important so that the quick spread of disease can be avoided. There were instances where cannibalism increased when there was a little room for the chickens to move around. That being said, you would think that the more room the chicken has, the happier it will be? This in fact is not the truth, so you have to do some calculations in advance to accommodate just the right number of chickens you want to keep in one coop.
